“We all have our own little Rebeccas.”
She rarely attends CoderDojo now, but tutor after tutor referenced nine-year-old Rebecca. CoderDojo’s founder, Rebecca Garcia explained who the eponymous girl was and what she represented. Little Rebecca came to CoderDojo having never heard of computer science. She became engrossed in learning to code, and her parents were thrilled because she struggled with severe ADHD. One day she turned to big Rebecca and asked, “Can you do this for a living?”
Over time, little Rebecca stopped attending CoderDojo sessions. “We called her parents and asked what was wrong,” Rebecca Garcia said. “They would say that this weekend Rebecca was at a science fair, or one time she was at Space Camp.” All this from a little girl who had never heard of computer science less than a year ago. Rebecca Garcia says this is the success of CoderDojo; it’s not about building a famous app, it’s about inspiring kids to dive into science and learning.
